The Bromance!
Video Game Rebirth

By Josh Allen on Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 for

Rebirth is a diverse and controversial subject. It is a mainstay of some religions and is even mentioned otherwise in everyday life, usually to help explain why people are assholes or one of those “painters” that hang around outside hardware stores. Because I don’t want to start a religious debacle (not just yet anyway,) I’ll venture into a safe alternative, the ripe field of rebirth in… video games!

Video game rebirth begins, most classically, with the password. Usually a complex array of alphanumerics, punctuation, and sometimes even cutesy symbols up to crazy red and blue dots, all being processed through an algorithm to derive your gaming assets in that virtual world. I suppose this isn’t a technical rebirth, but this allows one to start over from the point held in the data, to make a better choice or perhaps a worse choice purely for the challenge.

The other primary electronic gaming rebirth is held in the convenient power of the saved game. Just as with the usual construct of passwords, one is only allowed to create a backup of their current position at certain times. A famous scenario is that of the ability to save before a big door or hallway which obviously leads to a boss. More and more, games will permit the player to save their progress at any point in time. This is a feature especially popular in emulators. It can be considered cheap and abused, decreasing the full gameplay experience, but it’s also a handy tool for classic gamers who wish to maintain some semblance of having a real life. It really doesn’t favor too well when you can’t attend to your fragile nephew who just fell down the stairs because you’re in the middle of the big fight with Shao Khan.

Take these possibilities into the realm of the living, breathing world. You can make a checkpoint before a date to pursue different courses of action… to get to the action, to save your game before an interview with the boss to find a method of finagling a raise, or to become a circus performer who performs superhuman, dangerous feats. With the power of being able to reload yourself before a show just in case you happen to fuck up and bite the big one. The ability would eliminate risk and consequences from one’s actions and society would eventually – probably quickly – collapse. I can’t believe I thought this was a viable option… or maybe it is.

Anyway, I hope my article has taught you something. Even I have learned something from this torrent of useless words and philosophical ninny-poop; I have learned that I need to become a better writer. Lesson learned, Articlos, lesson learned.End
